History & Background
The park was the life's work of Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869–1943), who designed and created all the sculptures between 1924 and 1943. The Norwegian government provided Vigeland with a studio and living space in exchange for his promise to donate all his future works to the city. The park, part of the larger Frogner Park, was officially opened to the public in 1940. Vigeland's sculptures, which depict the cycle of human life, from birth to death, have made the park one of Norway's most visited tourist attractions.
