History & Background
Elkmont was established in the late 19th century as a logging town by the Little River Lumber Company. By the early 1900s, it transformed into a vacation destination for affluent families, who built summer homes there. The area was later incorporated into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the 1930s. Many structures were preserved, while others were left to decay, creating the evocative ruins seen today. The Elkmont Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
