History & Background
Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 after a severe storm exposed part of the settlement. Radiocarbon dating indicates it was inhabited between approximately 3180 BCE and 2500 BCE. The village consists of eight clustered houses and was occupied for about 600 years before being abandoned, possibly due to climate change. Unlike many prehistoric sites, Skara Brae's structures were built into midden material (domestic waste), which helped preserve them. The site provides crucial evidence about Neolithic architecture, technology, and domestic life in northern Europe.
Insider Tips
Visit early in the day or late afternoon to avoid crowds, especially during peak summer months.
Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear as the site can be exposed and windy even in summer.
Combine your visit with nearby Skaill House (a 17th-century mansion) for a complete historical experience.
Allow time to explore the excellent visitor center which provides important context before seeing the ruins.
Check the weather forecast and dress in layers - the coastal location can be much colder than inland areas.
